DIY Halloween Sensory Bin Filler

Want to give your sensory bins a spooky twist this Halloween? With just rice, pasta, and liquid watercolors, you can create a magical filler that’s fun and budget-friendly. The star of this project is black pasta—perfect for bats, spiders, and a little Halloween mystery!

Supplies You’ll Need

  • White rice (uncooked)
  • Pasta (bowties)
  • Liquid watercolors: red, blue, yellow & orange
  • Ziplock bags or mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet + parchment paper

How to Make Black with Liquid Watercolors

Since most sets don’t include black, you can mix your own:

  • Combine equal parts red, blue, and yellow liquid watercolors.
  • If the shade looks too brown, add a little more blue and red until it deepens to black.

Instructions

  1. Place pasta into a ziplock bag.
  2. Add drops of your mixed black watercolor. Seal the bag and shake until evenly coated.
  3. Spread onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and let dry for several hours (overnight is best).
  4. Next get a new ziplock bag and rice with orange water color. Seal the bag and shake until evenly coated. Repeat step 3.
  5. Once dry, mix your black pasta with orange rice for the ultimate Halloween look!

Play & Learn

This isn’t just spooky fun—kids get to see a little science in action too. Mixing primary colors to make black is a hands-on way to explore creativity while building fine motor skills through scooping, pouring, and imaginative play.

Because sometimes the simplest projects—like black pasta and orange rice—create the biggest smiles!

If you don’t want to make your own you can purchase it readymade from our farm store!
