DIY Bird Feeder for Family Fun

As a mom who thrives on outdoor adventures, I’m always on the lookout for engaging activities that keep my kids excited about nature. With winter finally coming to an end, we decided to craft something special for our the wild feathered friends—homemade bird feeders!

This requires very minimal supplies! Most of which you probably already have!
Here’s how we did it:

What You’ll Need
Toilet paper rolls (or any cardboard tube)
Peanut butter (or seed butter for allergies)
Birdseed (we used a mix of seeds for variety)
String (optional, for hanging)
Parchment paper or a plate to catch the mess

Directions
Spread the Peanut Butter: We slathered peanut butter all over the outside of the toilet paper roll. The kids loved getting their hands messy, and it was a great sensory experience!

After coating the roll, we rolled it in birdseed until it was thoroughly covered. The colorful seeds added a festive touch!

We simply stuck it on the branch for the birds. You can also threaded a piece of string through one end of the roll and tie it to a nearby tree branch.

We made a cozy spot by the window, where we could watch the birds come to visit. It was a joy to see different species stopping by to enjoy our homemade treat.

Crafting bird feeders is just one of many ways to enjoy the outdoors with your children. Whether it’s a snowy hike, a winter picnic, or a simple craft, there’s always an adventure waiting. So, bundle up, get outside, and let nature inspire your family time!

I’d love to hear your favorite outdoor activities during the winter months. What do you do to keep your kids engaged with nature? Share your ideas in the comments!
