6 Things You Need For Your Chicken Coop

Raising chickens is a rewarding experience, providing fresh eggs, natural pest control, and a fun hobby. However, to keep your flock happy and healthy, your chicken coop needs to be well-equipped. Here are the 6 essential things you need for your chicken coop:

1. Proper Ventilation
Good airflow is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment inside the coop. Proper ventilation helps reduce moisture, ammonia buildup, and prevents respiratory issues in your chickens. Ensure your coop has vents or windows that can be opened and closed as needed, especially during changing weather conditions. In the summer I also add a fan in the window.

2. Predator-proofing
Chickens are vulnerable to predators like foxes, raccoons, hawks, and even neighborhood dogs. If you are going to build a run attached to your coop instead of free-ranging be sure to use sturdy fencing—such as hardware cloth rather than chicken wire. Also bury fencing underground if digging predators are a concern Additionally, secure the coop doors with locks or latches.

3. Nesting Boxes
Providing comfortable nesting boxes encourages hens to lay eggs in a clean, safe space. A good rule of thumb is one nesting box for every 3-4 hens. Use clean, dry bedding like straw or wood shavings. I also love using the nesting pads in the boxes.

4. Roosting Bars
Roosting bars are a must for chickens and I use the general rule of 10-12 inches per chicken.

5. Feeding and Watering Stations
Fresh water and nutritious feed are essential for healthy chickens. Use easy-to-access waterers that prevent spillage and contamination, and provide feeders that keep feed clean and dry. Each day check and refill these stations to ensure your chickens stay hydrated and well-fed. I always feed our chickens outside to not invite rats or mice into the coop.

6. Cleanliness and Maintenance Supplies
A clean coop reduces disease risk and keeps your chickens comfortable. Stock up on cleaning supplies like brushes and bedding. I completely change the bedding in the coop every 3 days and once to twice a month in warmer weather I wash the entire coop with my pressure washer and soap.

Building a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained chicken coop is the foundation of successful chicken keeping. By ensuring these five essentials are in place, you’re well on your way to happy, healthy chickens laying plenty of eggs!
