Summer can be a wonderful time for backyard chickens—longer days, fresh greens, and plenty of sunshine. But the heat can also pose serious challenges for our feathered friends. Chickens are surprisingly resilient, but they need a little extra care during the hot months to stay healthy, happy, and productive. Here are my top 10 tips for caring for chickens in the summer heat.

1. Provide Plenty of Cool Fresh Water
Water is a top priority all the time but truly even more in the summer. Make sure your chickens always have access to clean, cool water. Consider adding multiple waterers around the coop and run/pasture to prevent crowding. Refresh the water at least twice daily to keep it fresh and inviting. Be sure to keep the water in the shade.
2. Create Cool Spots with Shade
Ensure your chickens have ample shade— trees, shade cloths, or tarps. Chickens love to stay cool under cover, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
3. Offer Frozen Veggie and Fruit Ice Blocks
A favorite summer treat for my flock is making ice blocks with fresh vegetables and fruits. Simply chop up treats like watermelon, berries, cucumbers, or leafy greens, place them in a small tupperware container, add water, and freeze. Pop them out and toss these into the run on hot days to help them cool down and enjoy a tasty snack.
4. Adjust Feeding Times
Feed your chickens during the cooler parts of the day—early morning and or late evening. Hot weather can reduce their appetite, and feeding during cooler times encourages them to eat and stay energized.
5. Ensure Good Ventilation in the Coop
Proper airflow helps reduce heat buildup inside the coop. Open windows, vents, or we also add a fan in the window.
6. Limit Increased Exercise During Peak Heat
Chickens tend to rest more during the heat of the day. Encourage them to stay in shaded places by providing water and treats in those areas.
7. Use Misters or Sprayers
A gentle misting system outside. This can help cool your flock. Use a fine spray and ensure the run dries quickly afterward to avoid any molding in your run.
8. Monitor for Signs of Heat Stress
Watch for panting, drooping wings, lethargy, or unusual behavior. If you notice these signs, take immediate steps to cool your chickens down by sticking their feet in a bucket of cool water, provide extra shade and water.
9. Keep the Coop Clean and Dry
A clean, dry environment helps prevent heat-related illnesses. Remove any wet bedding or droppings promptly, and ensure good airflow to keep humidity levels low. During the summer we completely strip the bedding every 3 days and add in new shavings.
10. Add A Dust Baths
Dust baths help chickens regulate their body temperature and help keep parasites at bay. Make sure they have access to a dry, sandy spot they can dust in during the hot months.
Summer with chickens is all about proactive care and providing a comfortable environment. With a little planning and some simple treats like frozen veggie and fruit ice blocks, you can keep your flock cool, healthy, and happy all season long.
